Keeping cats busy

Hey there, it’s Omega here with more tips, advice and great doggy sense.

Today Dad says I have to talk to you about cats. Yes, you heard me. Cats. Now I know that lots of dogs don’t like cats, but I do! I like the yowly noise they make when I go up and sniff them. I like the way they can grow really big and fluff up their hair when I bounce at them to ask them to play and I really like the hissy sound they make when I bark at them. The only thing I don’t like is their spikey claws, sometimes they can get a bit rough when I play with them and scratch my nose, I don’t like that.

Dad says that cats like to play and explore and be busy, just like me. But sometimes people have ‘inside cats’ because they don’t have gardens, or they live on a busy road, or it’s just not safe to let their cats explore. Those cats still need to play and use up their energy, otherwise they might claw the furniture or scratch the carpet (I’d never, ever do that, I’m a good girl). So, it’s very important that cats have toys to play with and their owners do things with them to make them happy. Here’s some great doggy tips on how to keep your cat entertained.

1. Have a chat

Cats love a good chat. Did you know that a meow is not a natural noise for a cat to make? They don’t meow at each other, they only use that noise to speak to their humans. That’s how much they like to talk!

2. Let them scratch

A scratching post is an essential item for an indoor cat. If you want them to leave the furniture alone, get them a scratching post to sharpen their claws on. One like this is perfect https://mutts.ie/product/base-camp-seagrass-cat-scratch-post/

3. Play chasing

Not the kind of chasing I like to play with cats. Dad says they don’t really like that. But cats are predators, so they like to hunt and chase things. Drag a string or a toy along the floor and play with them. Once their tail is up, it means they are having fun. We’ve a few cat toys in the shop (that I’m not allowed play with) so you can have a look and see which your cat would like best. https://mutts.ie/product-category/cat-products/cat-toys/

3. Get up high

Cats like to be up high, so it’s a great idea to give them something to climb or sit on that’s off the ground. (I think they just like looking down their noses at dogs, but Dad says it’s how they’d behave in the wild). A climbing toy like this one https://mutts.ie/product/cat-scratching-post-with-bed/ lets them scratch and use their claws to climb and it also gives them a comfy place to sleep.

4. Bring them out for a walk

Lots of cats don’t like walks (I know I didn’t believe it either when Dad told me, I mean who doesn’t like a walk???) But if you start their training young enough some cats can be taught to walk on a lead, like this one https://mutts.ie/product/cat-harness-lead-geo-pattern/. It’s also a great way to get an outdoor cat used to a new area if you move house.

I hope these tips are helpful for all you cat lovers out there. I’ve learned loads that I didn’t know. I’ll be back with more tips soon, but now I have to go and help Dad in the shop. Remember if you’ve any questions about cats, or dogs, or any other animals, just ask my Dad by typing the question into the chat box on our website.

See you soon

Omega xx
