Pet ID Tag – Keeping your dog safe and sound.
Hi everyone,
Omega here with more barkingly brilliant hints and tips for pet owners. This month I want to chat to you about keeping your dog safe. There’s been lots and lots of news recently about pet dogs and puppies being stolen or getting lost. I love my dad and my family, and I can’t imagine anything more scary than being taken away from them.
There’s lots of ways that you can help to keep your dog is safe. The first one is to make sure your pet is microchipped. You can get this done at any vets and then you just need to register the chip online. A chip means that if your dog gets lost or is taken, the gardai and rescue centres will be able to locate and reunite you if your dog is found. Remember to update your address if you move house and your phone number if that changes.
The second important thing is to make sure your garden is secure. Dogs can jump high (I can jump nearly as high as dad’s head!), they can scale walls, burrow through hedges, and even dig under fences, so if they are going to be left alone in the garden make sure they can’t get out and make sure that no one else can get in.
When you’re out walking your dog, keep it on the lead unless you are 100 percent certain of your recall. Lots of dogs will follow their noses or find a new friend and disappear off into the distance while their owners desperately try to call them back. It can be very easy for curious dogs to get lost. So, if your dog doesn’t always answer when you call their name, play it safe and keep them on a lead. Extendable leads like this one https://mutts.ie/product/flexi-lead-classic-tape-5m/ give your dog a little bit of freedom while still keeping them safe, just be sure to keep it short if you are close to a road.
The final and most important way to make sure that your dog is safe is to always have a pet id tag on its collar (Did you know that in Ireland it’s a legal requirement to have a pet Id tag on your dog? What a great idea!). That way if it gets out of the garden, escapes while out on a walk or does a surprise dive out the front door, anyone who finds it will be able to contact you. You can get a dog tag and have it engraved at my dad’s pet shop, Pet ID Tags | mutts.ie. The tag can have any information you like. Quite often it’s just the dog’s name and your phone number, but sometimes people add a note to say that the dog is chipped. Or you can even add a medi alert if your dog has allergies. It’s really important to update your Pet id tag information if you change your phone number. We’ve got loads of different tags in our shop, so you can pick one that suits your dog’s personality. To find out more drop into our shop or visit us online.
As always, my dad is happy to help with any questions you have about your pets. You can talk to him on the chat button on our online store or stop into the shop (you might even be lucky and get to meet me!)
For now, stay safe and have a growling great summer!
See you soon
